Sandra Cisneros (b. 1954) is a key figure in Chicana literature, best known for her acclaimed first novel The House on Mango Street. Her work usually deals with themes of identity, isolation, poverty, and sexist attitudes in both Mexican and American culture.

In 1998 she founded the Macondo Foundation, which helps socially-conscious writers achieve their goals. Starting as a small workshop in her kitchen, it has grown into a multicultural system of support and cultural exchange.
