Cynthia Leitich Smith: I got a wonderful letter from a Chinese-American teenager about my novel Eternal. She offered suggestions for future stories, and at the very end she said “P.S.: It was very nice to see an Asian girl hero pick up a battle axe.”
We need diverse books because teens of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, genders should be able to see themselves as the hero in books. Cynthia’s fan letter serves as a reminder of that.
