"It shouldn’t be a rule that if you’re Black you should only write Black characters, but if you’re White, you can write Native Americans, of African Americans, or Asian or Latino. That’s why it irritates me a little bit when people make a big deal out of it. I don’t mind getting asked the question, but then I’ll have people say, "But why are you doing that?” and I’m like, “Wait a minute. Why is it that as a Black author I have to be limited but other authors are not?"
